Story: The Emotional
Element: Water

The Eight is how we first try to overcome the obstacle of the Seven, or the result when we do… if we’ve learned our lesson, that is. Keywords: Experience, Leaving, Learning, Stuck, Quick – yes, this one has some contradictions, doesn’t it? Why do you think that is?

Card meaning

Recognizing when it’s time to move on is the major story of the Eight of Cups. Sometimes, our emotional ocean stagnates, and we can choose to either break out the paddles and extend personal effort in hopes of recovering, but more often, the ocean of our lives is too vast to make any progress this way.

In the imagery of the card, the figure takes the time to carefully stack his cups before heading into the light of the moon.

When the Eight of Cups appears in a reading, it is time to move on from the stagnant emotional swamp we have been living in. But while this departure is difficult, it is only painful if the card shows up in its shadowed perspective. This chapter of your life is over, and it is best to take a moment to carefully reflect on the work you have done up until this point, and then turn the page.

The emotion of pain can be a great motivator for change, and a great indicator as to the direction you should go. Under the light of the moon, this card can also be a great help when we need to choose between the physical and the spiritual, guided by our emotions. Spiritual over physical doesn’t always win when this card appears, and it’s important to remember that as we go through this transition, we need to take care of our physical needs so that we can support and lift ourselves onto our next emotional journey.
