A Short History of Hoodoo Candle Magic

Candle magic is one of the most visible faces of hoodoo today, yet it’s also among the tradition’s youngest innovations, emerging in the early twentieth century as Roman Catholic offertory candle practices blended with African American folk magic in New Orleans. Catherine Yronwode, proprietor of Lucky Mojo Curio Company and pastor of Missionary Independent Spiritual Church, has spent decades documenting this tradition.

This slim but dense volume pulls together Yronwode’s long-running research alongside classic texts by Mikhail Strabo, the mid-century writer whose Spiritual Church booklets first brought candle ministry into mainstream hoodoo. Together, the two voices cover everything from the historical roots of candle conjure to the practical mechanics of dressing, inscribing, and burning candles for specific intentions.

What’s Inside

The book walks through selecting and preparing candles, timing spells by moon phase and day of the week, reading wax and flame signs, and constructing full altar layouts for love, money, protection, and more. A dedicated section on vigil candle ministry makes it equally useful for those running a private candle-setting service or a public Spiritual Church program. The writing is direct and draws on primary sources.

How to Use The Art of Hoodoo Candle Magic

Put this book to work in your candle practice with these three steps.

  1. Start with History and Foundations

Read Part One before touching a candle. Yronwode's historical overview of candle magic in America grounds your practice in documented tradition rather than guesswork, which makes every technique you learn after it far more meaningful.

  2. Build Your Candle Altar and Tool Set

Follow the chapter on assembling candle magic tools to stock the basics: offertory candles, figural candles, a heat-safe holder, anointing oils, and a petition paper. The book lists exactly what you need without pushing you to overspend.

  3. Work a Spell from Start to Finish

Choose one intention, pick the corresponding candle color and oil from the tables, inscribe and dress the candle as directed, then monitor the flame and wax signs while it burns. Log your results in a notebook for future reference.

The Tarot Fellow Standard

I stock this title because Yronwode cites sources and writes about the African American cultural roots of the tradition. It’s a short book with a lot in it, and it pairs well with the candle supplies and condition oils I carry. Hoodoo is a living tradition, and I offer this book as an entry point, not a substitute for learning from practitioners and community. If you’re building a working hoodoo library, this belongs on the first shelf alongside my other traditional conjure books.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this book good for beginners to hoodoo candle magic?

Yes. Yronwode writes clearly and provides step-by-step instructions alongside historical context, making it accessible to anyone new to hoodoo while still being detailed enough for experienced rootworkers.

Does the book cover reading candle flames and wax signs?

It does. A full section covers pyromancy, ceromancy, and capnomancy, teaching you to interpret flame behavior, wax residue patterns, and smoke signs both while the candle is burning and after it finishes.

What kinds of spells are included in the book?

Spells cover love and attraction, money and prosperity, protection, commanding respect, house blessing, breaking up a couple, and vigil candle ministry for both private practitioners and Spiritual Church use.

Who is Mikhail Strabo and why is his work included?

Mikhail Strabo was a mid-century Spiritual Church writer whose 1940s booklets first documented candle ministry in African American churches. His classic texts appear in this volume alongside Yronwode's commentary.

It's informative but I only recommend it for people that are well versed in hoodoo already... for a beginner it will be pointless and make u mad. Everything requires a bunch of tools and a lot of words that a beginner may have a hard time understanding. this is one of my least favorite hoodoo books
