Two traditions, one bottle
White sage (Salvia apiana) is the scent most people picture when they think of clearing a room. It grows in the chaparral scrub of the American Southwest, and its smoky, herbaceous scent has been central to purification practices among Indigenous peoples of that region for centuries. The fragrance alone carries that association, a dense green smokiness that says something is being released.
Palo santo (Bursera graveolens) brings a completely different register. Its name translates to “holy wood” in Spanish, and it comes from the dry coastal forests of Peru and Ecuador, where it’s long been used in South American folk tradition for cleansing, upliftment, and protection. The scent is sweet and resinous with a soft citrus brightness underneath, nothing like the smoke-forward character of sage. Where sage clears, palo santo lifts. Together they form what I think of as the complete cleansing pair: one addresses what you want gone, the other makes room for what you want to arrive.
This blend is the “elevating” option in the white sage lineup. I also carry a white sage-only fragrance oil for those who want a focused purification note without the lift, and a separate patchouli and dragon’s blood blend that reads as deeper and more grounding. This one lands in between but tilts upward, which is exactly what makes it reach for when the work calls for both clearing and renewal in the same session.
How to use this oil
Three simple steps to get the most out of this white sage and palo santo fragrance oil.
- Choose your moment and set the space
Pick a calm moment when you won't be interrupted. Open a window slightly so stale energy has somewhere to go. A clean, uncluttered space helps the oil's scent register without competing smells muddying it.
- Apply the oil with intention
Dab a small amount on pulse points, wrists, or the base of the throat. Breathe in slowly and let the white sage and palo santo notes settle. The herbaceous sage clears while the sweet woodsy palo santo lifts your mood upward.
- Carry or diffuse for sustained effect
A drop on a cotton round tucked in a pocket keeps the scent close throughout the day. You can also add a drop to an unlit candle's wax pool before lighting it, releasing the blend gently as the wax warms around the wick.
