A Traditional Tool for Cleansing and Protection
Blue balls, also called bluing balls or anil, are compressed laundry bluing agents that hoodoo practice has taken up as a traditional curio. The active component is a synthetic ultramarine or indigo-based pigment, the same class of colorant used in old-fashioned laundry bluing products to counteract yellowing in white fabrics. In hoodoo (conjure), this deep blue tint is associated with spiritual cleansing and the removal of crossed conditions.
I stock these because bluing shows up in folk magic literature and in the working practice of people who take floor washes seriously. The use of bluing in spiritual baths and wash waters is documented hoodoo practice, and it’s still used today as a practical anchor for cleansing ritual. You can dissolve one ball in a mop bucket and clear a home, dissolve part of one in a bath and carry that work on your body, or place a bluing bowl near the entrance of a space you want to keep spiritually clean.
This pack contains 2 balls. Each one can go a long way, since you don’t need a whole ball to tint your water, and that indigo blue is unmistakable once it blooms in warm water. If you’re building out your cleansing practice, these pair naturally with my ritual washes and fit right alongside the rest of my protection and cleansing supplies.
The Tarot Fellow Standard
I carry these because the product is consistent and reliable. Laundry bluing is an ordinary commercial laundry product that hoodoo practice has taken up for baths and floor washes, and the compressed ball is the form I carry. Hoodoo is a living tradition, and I offer this as an entry point, not a substitute for learning from practitioners and community. Keep them away from children and pets, and don’t let the indigo stain surfaces you care about. They dissolve cleanly in water, and that’s exactly what you want in a working supply.
How to Use Blue Balls
Use blue balls in floor washes, spiritual baths, or cleansing bowls to clear crossed conditions and purify your space.
- Prepare a Floor Wash
Drop one blue ball into a bucket of warm water and let it dissolve fully. The water will turn a soft indigo blue. Add a splash of salt if you like, then mop from the back of the room toward the front door to push out crossed conditions.
- Use in a Spiritual Bath
Dissolve one blue ball in a warm bath or a basin of water. Soak for at least 10 minutes while focusing on release and cleansing. Pat dry afterward and rinse with clean water if your skin feels irritated.
- Add to a Cleansing Bowl
Place a bowl of water on your altar or near your front door and dissolve half a ball in it to create a standing cleanse for your space. Refresh the water every few days, or whenever it feels stagnant or the ritual feels complete.
Frequently Asked Questions
Blue balls are compressed laundry bluing agents, made from a synthetic ultramarine or indigo pigment. They are not crystals or minerals. The same pigment has been used in laundry bluing since the 19th century to brighten white fabrics.
They are traditionally dissolved in bath water in small amounts for spiritual bathing. Keep the balls away from children and pets, as noted on the packaging. Avoid contact with eyes, and rinse any sensitive skin areas if irritation occurs.
This listing includes 2 blue balls. Each ball can be used whole or split in half depending on the application, so the pack gives you several uses. A small amount of bluing goes a long way in water, so start with less and adjust.
Laundry bluing is a commercial laundry product that hoodoo, an African American folk magic tradition, uses for spiritual baths, floor washes, and jinx removal. The product is also known as anil or bluing balls.
