Van Van is arguably the most well-traveled formula in American Hoodoo. Rootworkers in the Algiers district of New Orleans were so devoted to it that, by some accounts, the scent of lemongrass and citronella grass drifted through the neighborhood streets. The name itself traces back to the French Creole pidginization of vervain — the herb Verbena officinalis — which early Louisiana practitioners sometimes called “van van.” Over time, the formula shifted toward the aromatic Asian grasses: lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), citronella (Cymbopogon nardus), vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides), and palmarosa — all of them grasses, all of them carrying that sharp, citrus-forward cut-and-clear character that defines the formula’s action.

What makes Van Van distinct from general luck formulas is its dual role: it clears and it draws. The lemongrass-forward scent profile is not incidental. Lemongrass has long been associated with purification and road-opening in folk traditions across Louisiana, the Caribbean, and West Africa. In practical Hoodoo terms, that means you are not just attracting good fortune — you are sweeping away the stagnant or crossed conditions that were blocking it in the first place.
