Black Cohosh in Folk Magic
Cimicifuga racemosa, a native eastern North American plant also known as black snakeroot, is also used in hoodoo to keep evil out and break jinxes. In ritual practice, this root is used to shore up personal courage before a confrontation, court appearance, difficult conversation, or any situation that requires standing one’s ground. It is also used to keep evil from entering the home and to address crossed conditions.
Black cohosh also appears in ritual practice as an herb of protection and love, and in incense blends designed to drive away malicious spirits and prevent the evil eye. The powdered form is particularly useful for floor-wash preparations, where a small amount is dissolved into a bucket of water with hyssop and rue for a thorough uncrossing of a living space. It can also be added to sprinkled protection powders applied at doorways and thresholds. Browse my herb collection for companion herbs used in these workings.
Building a Personal Courage Charm with Black Cohosh
The 1 oz powder size gives you enough material for multiple charm bags and a floor-wash preparation. A classic courage charm involves packing a red flannel bag with a pinch of black cohosh powder, a piece of High John the Conqueror root, a lodestone, and a written petition naming the situation you need courage to face. The bag is tied with red cord, held in the dominant hand, and spoken to directly before being carried on the person during the challenging situation.
For protection work, black cohosh powder can be incorporated into candle magic by dusting it around the base of a black or white protective candle, or by blending it into incense burned at windows and doorways. When used in a poppet working for someone struggling with fear, it is stuffed inside along with other power-building herbs and prayed over regularly. Store the powder in a sealed jar away from light.
How to Use Black Cohosh Root Powder
Three methods for using black cohosh root powder in courage, protection, and uncrossing work.
- Build a Personal Courage Charm Bag
Place a pinch of black cohosh powder in a red flannel bag with a lodestone and a written petition. Tie with red cord, hold in your dominant hand, and state your intention. Carry during situations requiring courage.
- Prepare an Uncrossing Floor Wash
Add a half teaspoon of black cohosh powder to hot water with hyssop and rue. Mop from back of your space toward the front door, sweeping out crossed conditions. Dispose of wash water away from your property.
- Dress a Protection Candle
Anoint a black or white pillar candle with protection oil and dust black cohosh powder around its base. Light on Saturday or a waning moon for banishing work, intending to drive away evil and build courage.
The Tarot Fellow Standard
I stock black cohosh root powder for practitioners facing difficult personal situations who need more than a vague “protection herb.” It is also used in hoodoo to keep evil out and break jinxes. For complete protection ritual setups, explore my protection and evil eye herbs.
