Black Does the Heavy Work
I keep a lot of colors in stock, and people ask me regularly what the difference is. The fabric is the same. The construction is the same. The difference is what black means. In color magic, black bags aren’t just a color choice. A black bag is a working tool. It’s associated with the absorption of negative energy, with banishing, with putting a hard stop to something that shouldn’t continue. Saturn rules black in classical planetary magic, and Saturn is the planet of limits, of endings, of the force that holds a boundary firm. A black bag, loaded with the right materials, is doing something. It’s not decorative.
The logic of a black bag is simple: black takes what you want gone and holds it, neutralizing it rather than pushing it back. It’s a container for what you don’t want loose. That’s a different function than a red bag or a blue bag, and it warrants a different approach when you’re loading it.
The 5 by 7 size fits a standard tarot deck, a full rune set, or a layered charm bag with herbs, stones, and a petition paper. The velveteen pile is soft enough to protect gilded and foiled card edges. The drawstring pulls snug and holds. If you’re doing shadow work, building a protection working, or you just need a reliable, correctly sized pouch to house a tarot deck you read with regularly, this is the bag.
How to Use This Bag
Three ways to put this black velveteen pouch to work.
- Set a protection intention
Hold the empty bag in your left hand. Breathe slowly and call to mind what you want to keep out. When the intention feels clear, you are ready to load the bag.
- Load your working materials
Place your protective herbs, black tourmaline, obsidian, or petition paper inside. Black bags are often used to hold banishing and protection workings. Pull the cord snug.
- Store your tarot deck
Slide your tarot deck in face down and pull the drawstring closed. The velveteen interior is soft enough to protect gilded or foiled card edges from scratches during storage and travel.
Tarot Fellow Standard
I stock these bags because the quality has been consistent. Same dimensions run to run, seams that hold, drawstring that doesn’t fray out after a few weeks of use. That sounds like a low bar, and it is, but it’s the bar that a lot of cheap pouches at this price point fail at. I’ve pulled listings before when a batch came in short. These haven’t given me a reason to do that.
A note on fit: standard tarot decks (Rider-Waite sized, approximately 2.75 by 4.75 inches) fit with room to spare. If your deck is wider than about 4.5 inches, check the dimensions before ordering. The bag doesn’t stretch. What you see is what you get.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. A standard tarot deck measures roughly 2.75 by 4.75 inches. The 5 by 7 pouch fits most standard decks with room to spare. Large-format oracle decks may be too wide.
Velveteen is a cotton-polyester blend with a short pile that mimics velvet. It is soft, resists light abrasion, and is gentle on card edges and polished stone surfaces.
Black absorbs and neutralizes energy rather than reflecting it. In Western occult correspondences it is tied to Saturn, banishing, and creating a firm boundary.
Hand-wash cold if needed and air dry. Avoid soaking or prolonged direct sunlight to preserve the black dye. The velveteen holds up well with reasonable care.
