Frankincense: The Sacred Smoke of Temples and Ceremony
Frankincense is the dried resin of Boswellia trees, a genus native to the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa, with primary commercial harvesting in Oman, Yemen, and Somalia. Like myrrh, it is collected by scoring the bark and allowing the resin to bleed out and harden into irregular golden to amber lumps called tears. Boswellia sacra, the Omani frankincense, is considered the highest quality and commands premium status among resin traders. The trade of frankincense along the ancient Incense Road is documented as far back as 5000 years, connecting Arabia and East Africa to Mediterranean and Near Eastern civilizations through one of the earliest long-distance commodity trade networks in history.
No ritual incense has a more universal sacred pedigree than frankincense. It burned in the temples of ancient Egypt as a divine offering, in the Jerusalem Temple as part of the Ketoret holy incense formula, in early Christian liturgy where it remains central to high church services globally, in Islamic tradition where its use in prayer spaces is documented across centuries, and in Western occult ceremonial magic where it consecrates space and elevates consciousness for formal working.
Frankincense Incense Sticks for Daily and Ceremonial Use
Frankincense incense sticks deliver the characteristic clean, resinous, slightly citrus-tinged smoke of Boswellia resin in stick form, making it accessible for everyday practice without needing charcoal tablets and a heat-safe burner. The smoke produced is noticeably different from synthetic “frankincense scented” incense, which typically smells sweet and flat compared to the real resin. Practitioners who use frankincense primarily for atmospheric space-setting before reading or meditating will find stick form entirely adequate. For heavy ceremonial use requiring maximum smoke volume, granular resin on charcoal remains the traditional choice.
How to Use Frankincense Incense Sticks
Three steps for using frankincense incense sticks effectively in ritual, meditation, and ceremonial practice.
- Light and Prepare the Stick
Light the tip of one stick until it catches, then blow it out. Place it in a holder with good ash-catching space. Frankincense produces sustained, moderately dense smoke that transforms any room into recognizable sacred working atmosphere.
- Burn Before Intentional Work
Burn frankincense before prayer, meditation, tarot reading, or the start of any intentional working. Its role as a consciousness-elevating incense is documented from ancient Egypt through Abrahamic liturgical practice to modern Western ritual use.
- Layer with Myrrh for Full Temple Effect
Pair frankincense with myrrh for the classic temple combination used in Egyptian and Abrahamic rites. Burn frankincense first to raise the vibration, then add myrrh for depth. This pairing appears across multiple longstanding world traditions.
The Tarot Fellow Standard
I stock frankincense incense sticks because frankincense belongs in every serious practice toolkit, full stop. It is the single most cross-traditional sacred incense in human ritual history. The 10-pack format is practical for regular use without over-committing.
