How Self-Lighting Charcoal Tablets Work
Swift Lite charcoal tablets are the standard method for burning granular and resin incenses that cannot burn on their own. Unlike incense sticks, which contain a pre-mixed charcoal base, loose resins such as frankincense, myrrh, benzoin, copal, and dragon’s blood require an external heat source to release their aromatic compounds. Self-lighting charcoal tablets like Swift Lite contain saltpeter (potassium nitrate), which provides enough oxidizing power to ignite the tablet with a single flame and sustain a glow across the entire surface within 30 to 60 seconds.
The 33mm diameter is the most widely used size for solo home practice. It provides enough surface area for several small additions of resin or herb material over the course of a 45 to 60 minute burn, without generating more heat than a standard censer or shell can safely contain. The cupped upper surface on the tablet holds loose materials in place as they heat and release aromatic smoke. Swift Lite in particular is known in the practitioner community for consistent ignition and even heat distribution across the tablet surface.
Ventilation, Safety, and Technique for Resin Incense Work
Burning resin incense on charcoal produces considerably more smoke than stick incense, and ventilation is not optional. Work near an open window or door, and do not use charcoal in a sealed room. The tablets reach temperatures high enough to crack or scorch thin ceramic; always use a heatproof vessel, ideally a brass or cast iron censer filled with sand, which diffuses the heat and prevents the container from overheating. For granular resin incense, add a small pinch at a time rather than covering the tablet, which smothers the coal and kills the burn.
Store unused tablets in an airtight container or sealed bag in a dry location. Moisture is the primary enemy of self-lighting charcoal: even moderate humidity can partially neutralize the saltpeter ignition layer, making tablets difficult or impossible to light. A single roll of 10 tablets typically lasts a solo practitioner through several months of regular ritual work if stored properly between sessions.
How to Use Swift Lite Charcoal Tablets
How to light and use Swift Lite charcoal tablets safely for burning loose resins and granular incense.
- Prepare Your Censer
Fill a heatproof censer or shell with an inch of sand to diffuse heat. Set the censer on a heatproof surface. Open a window before lighting, since resin incense produces substantial smoke that quickly fills an enclosed and poorly ventilated room.
- Light the Tablet
Hold the tablet by one edge with tongs. Apply flame to the opposite edge. The tablet sparks and crackles as saltpeter ignites and the glow spreads over 30 to 60 seconds. Place it concave side up in the prepared censer once the whole surface glows.
- Add Incense in Small Amounts
Once the surface turns gray-white and crackling stops, add a small pinch of resin, herb, or incense. Add more in small amounts as each burns. Too much at once smothers the coal. Let the tablet cool fully before touching or discarding the ash.
The Tarot Fellow Standard
Swift Lite is the brand I reach for when I want reliable ignition without fuss. The consistent saltpeter distribution means the tablet lights evenly rather than sparking in one spot and staying cold elsewhere, which is the frustrating behavior you get from lower-quality charcoal. A 10-tablet roll is the right quantity for a practitioner who burns incense regularly but not every day. Pair these tablets with the incense and burner selection in my shop to complete your resin burning setup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Saltpeter (potassium nitrate) is an oxidizing agent that lets the tablet ignite with a single flame and sustain a glow without continuous heat. Without it, charcoal requires sustained high heat to light, making it impractical for home ritual use.
Swift Lite 33mm tablets burn approximately 45 to 60 minutes under normal conditions. Burn time varies with ventilation and humidity. Adding large amounts of resin at once can shorten the burn by partially smothering the glowing charcoal surface.
Moisture is the most common cause. Humidity neutralizes the saltpeter ignition layer. Store tablets in an airtight container in a dry place. If a tablet sparks then goes out, it has absorbed moisture; a fresh tablet from a sealed roll will light.
Self-lighting charcoal contains saltpeter, which ignites with a single lighter flame. Regular vegetable charcoal requires sustained high heat such as a torch to light. Self-lighting is far more convenient and practical for home ritual altar work.
