Chandan: The Sacred Fragrance of Indian Devotion
Chandan is the Hindi and Sanskrit name for sandalwood, and it carries one of the longest devotional records of any incense ingredient on earth. Santalum album, the true Indian sandalwood from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, has been offered at Shaivite and Vaishnavite temples for more than three thousand years. Temple priests applied sandalwood paste to deity images, altar cloths, and the foreheads of worshippers, and the smoke of burning chandan marked the transition from ordinary activity into sacred time. The Pure Vibrations Super Chandan blend captures that warm, creamy depth in a 20-stick pack sized for regular home practice.
Across Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions, sandalwood sits at the top of the fragrance hierarchy because it is believed to please every category of deity without reservation. The Vishnu Purana and several Tantric texts specify chandan as an offering that purifies the space, lifts the mind above mundane concerns, and makes prayers more audible to the divine. In Buddhist temple contexts, the scent is associated with the quality of prajna, or wisdom, and with the dissolution of ego-attachment during seated meditation.
Ritual Uses and Practical Notes
I burn Super Chandan most often at the opening of any seated practice, letting the smoke clear the space before meditation or tarot work. The fragrance pairs well with rose or jasmine when the ritual calls for devotion to a goddess figure, and with plain white candles or ghee lamps in a more austerely styled shrine. The crown and third eye chakra associations reflect its traditional role: chandan is understood to open the higher energy centers and support contemplative states. Practitioners working with Ganesha, Lakshmi, Saraswati, or any aspect of Shiva will find it a tradition-aligned offering.
These sticks burn cleanly and hold the fragrance through the full stick without the heavy chemical back-note that cheaper sandalwood blends can carry. At 20 sticks per pack, it is a practical quantity for a weekly practice. Store sealed when not in use, away from direct sunlight, to preserve the top notes. How to Use Super Chandan Incense Sticks
A simple opening ritual for using Super Chandan in seated devotion or meditation.
- Prepare the space and holder
Place a stick incense holder on a stable, heat-safe surface near your altar or meditation seat. Clear the area of clutter, light a candle if you use one, and take three slow breaths to signal the shift from daily activity into ritual time.
- Light and establish intention
Hold the stick tip to a flame until the end glows, then blow out the flame, leaving the ember. As the first smoke rises, state your intention aloud or silently: a prayer, a dedication to a deity, or the quality of mind you are cultivating.
- Close and store properly
When the stick has burned fully and the ember is cold, dispose of the ash respectfully. If any stick is only partially burned, let the tip cool completely before storing it upright in a dry container, away from sunlight, to preserve the blend.
