Holy Wood from the Andes

Palo Santo, Bursera graveolens, has been used in Andean and Amazonian ceremony for centuries. The name translates as holy wood, and it earned that designation through generations of use in healing sessions, offerings, and purification rites by indigenous peoples across Peru and Ecuador. When burned, it releases a warm, slightly sweet, woody smoke with faint citrus undertones, a scent that is notably lighter and less abrasive than white sage.

Madre Tierra produces these sticks by hand, rolling a blend of Palo Santo with natural resins and botanicals over a sustainable bamboo core. This construction gives the smoke more complexity than plain wood chips and ensures an even, consistent burn. The bamboo core catches more reliably than raw wood alone, which makes these easier to use for people who are new to Palo Santo or who have found raw sticks temperamental to light.

How to Use Palo Santo Madre Tierra Incense Sticks

Using Palo Santo incense sticks is straightforward. Here is the standard method for safe, effective burning.

  1. Light and Extinguish the Flame

Hold the stick at 45 degrees and light the tip with a match. Let it burn 30 seconds, then blow out the flame. The stick should smolder and release a thin stream of smoke rather than a large flame. Relight if it goes out before the session ends.

  2. Move Through Your Space

Walk the smoldering stick through your space, letting smoke reach corners and doorways. Set it in a fireproof holder between passes. Open a window so smoke can move through the room rather than build up. Never leave burning incense unattended.

  3. Store and Reuse the Stick

Rest the stick in a fireproof dish after use. Palo Santo self-extinguishes once the smoldering naturally stops. The remaining stick relights for future sessions. Each stick provides multiple short burns before it is fully spent and used up.

The Tarot Fellow Standard

I carry Madre Tierra because the hand-rolled construction burns consistently and the scent is genuinely pleasant rather than overpowering. Plain Palo Santo sticks can be tricky to keep lit. This format solves that problem without synthetic binders or artificial fragrance. For more incense options, browse my incense collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these plain Palo Santo sticks or a blend?

Madre Tierra hand-rolls these with natural resins and botanicals on a bamboo core. They are not plain wood sticks. The Palo Santo is blended with complementary botanicals, giving the smoke a richer, more layered scent than raw wood chips alone.

What is Palo Santo exactly?

Palo Santo is Bursera graveolens, a tree native to Peru and Ecuador, used by Andean peoples in ceremony for centuries. The name means holy wood in Spanish. It is distantly related to frankincense and myrrh in the Burseraceae plant family.

What does Palo Santo smell like?

The smoke has a warm, slightly sweet, woody scent with faint citrus notes. Most find it lighter than white sage. It is often described as cleaner-smelling than conventional incense, with a pleasant lingering aroma after the stick goes out entirely.

How long does a pack of 8 sticks last?

Each pack has 8 hand-rolled sticks. With short sessions of 2 to 5 minutes per use, each stick lasts 3 to 5 sessions. The full pack provides enough material for a month or more of regular clearing or meditation at a moderate pace of use.
