Bloodstone and the Elder Futhark
The Elder Futhark is the oldest runic alphabet, its 24 characters arranged in three groups of eight called aetts. Used across Germanic and Norse cultures for divination, inscription, and ritual, the runes carry meanings that span courage, protection, harvest, travel, and the forces of fate. Pairing them with bloodstone brings together two traditions that both trace their roots to ancient Europe and the Near East.
Bloodstone, known to the ancient world as heliotrope, has been prized since Mesopotamia as a stone of vitality, grounding, and protection. Its deep green matrix marked by iron-oxide inclusions gives it an unmistakable appearance. In the medieval period it was associated with courage and sacrifice, making it a fitting material for a divination set rooted in warrior tradition. The gold lettering on each stone keeps the symbols legible whether you are reading by candlelight or laying a full spread on an altar cloth.
Reading with Stone Runes
Stone runes offer a weight and texture that printed cards cannot replicate. Drawing a rune from a bag or casting a set onto a cloth connects the reader physically to the symbol, which many practitioners find deepens their focus. The blank stone in this set, sometimes called the Wyrd or Odin rune, represents the unknowable or the question not yet formed, and its inclusion rounds out a complete traditional set.
How to Use the Bloodstone Rune Set
A practical guide to working with your bloodstone rune set for divination and ritual.
- Prepare Your Space
Place a soft cloth or reading mat on a flat surface. Hold all 25 stones in both hands for a moment, focusing on your question or intention. This brief pause helps you center before drawing, which many readers find sharpens the reading.
- Draw or Cast Your Runes
For a single-rune draw, reach into the bag without looking and pull one stone. For a three-rune spread covering past, present, and future, draw three in sequence. Lay each face-up on your cloth and note the orientation before reading.
- Interpret and Record
Consult an Elder Futhark reference or your own working knowledge of the symbols. Note the stone's condition, any inversion, and your intuitive response. Recording readings in a journal builds a personal rune vocabulary over time.
The Tarot Fellow Standard
I carry this set because bloodstone is one of the most historically resonant stones I stock, and the Elder Futhark deserves a material that matches its gravitas. Gold lettering on dark green stone reads clearly in ritual conditions without being fussy. Natural stones vary slightly in size and patterning, so each set is genuinely unique. Yes. The gold lettering makes each symbol clear, which is helpful while you are still learning the 24 Elder Futhark characters. I recommend pairing this set with a dedicated rune reference book for the best experience as a beginner reader.

I am just learning about runes, but I am pleased with this purchase. Would recommend to a friend.
I’m disappointed that the 12th of the Eldar Futhark runes is missing. There is one bloodstone that is missing an engraving. The drawstring bag included was not sewn at the bottom, so unusable. I really like the tumbled stones which are decent quality crystals, the engraving and bag, however, are not.
Gorgeous, good quality, and they feel really nice!
Gift for my witchy friend. I cleansed them before wrapping and they are beautiful
