Is it safe to burn mugwort incense indoors?

Yes, as long as the room has some airflow. Crack a window or door, use a stable holder that catches falling ash, and keep the stick away from curtains, papers, and anything else flammable. Never leave a lit stick unattended, and keep pets and small children clear of the burning end. A little smoke in a well-ventilated room is standard incense practice, not a special requirement for mugwort specifically.

How long does a mugwort incense stick burn?

A standard stick like the ones in this six-pack typically burns for somewhere around thirty to forty-five minutes, though the exact time depends on the stick's thickness and the room's airflow. If you only want a short burst of scent, you can light it, let it run for a few minutes, and press out the ember early rather than letting the whole stick burn down.

Will incense smoke set off a smoke detector?

It can, especially with a detector mounted close to where you're burning. Ionization-style smoke detectors tend to be more sensitive to incense smoke than photoelectric ones. I'd rather you burn incense a reasonable distance from any detector and in a ventilated room than have your ritual interrupted by a false alarm, and it's worth testing the distance in your own space before settling into a regular habit.

What does mugwort incense actually smell like?

Earthy and herbal, closer to a dried garden bed than to anything sweet or floral. It doesn't have the heaviness of a resin like amber or frankincense, so it tends to sit in the background of a room rather than filling it. That lighter quality is part of why mugwort has traditionally been paired with quiet, reflective work like journaling or dreamwork rather than louder ceremonial use.
