A White Rabbit Checking His Watch Beside a Mossy Grandfather Clock

The white rabbit leans toward the clock with his watch raised. His fur is cut in fine strokes, his long ears sweep back, and one pale blue eye, rimmed in pink, looks along the watch face. He wears a red coat over a yellow waistcoat, and one foot rests on a red-orange toadstool dotted with white, with a smaller toadstool beside it. Behind him a moss-green clock rises like a tower, its surface textured like moss and leaves. The dial is cream with black Arabic numerals, a red second hand, and a gold-tone rim, with the word Quartz printed above the six. Under the dial a dark window frames a gold pendulum bob on a thin rod. A yellow backflow cone stands behind the rabbit’s ear, in the spot made for it, and the base below is a cracked brown path edged in grass. Two dials share the scene: the big one that tells the hour, and the small gold one the rabbit holds up to his nose. The red of his coat is the brightest color on the piece, which draws the eye straight to the watch.

The White Rabbit opens Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, published in 1865. Alice is growing tired of sitting by her sister on the bank when a White Rabbit with pink eyes runs close by her. She hears him muttering to himself that he shall be late, which seems quite natural to Alice at the time. Then he takes a watch out of his waistcoat-pocket, looks at it, and hurries away. Alice has never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket or a watch to take out of it, so she runs across the field after him and follows him down a rabbit hole. Wikipedia describes the character as a hurried, waistcoat-clad rabbit who perpetually consults his pocket watch. This sculpture holds that first moment still: the coat, the watch, and the worry about time, with a second clock behind him that makes the hour visible from across the room. One glimpse of a watch pulled from a waistcoat is enough to start the whole story, and the sculpture keeps that glimpse in view.

Practical Ritual Applications

Stand the burner where you check the time anyway: a study desk, a hallway console, or a bookshelf in a room with still air. The clock face makes it useful every day, and a lit cone turns it into an evening piece. Choose a backflow cone, stand it in the burner’s cone spot, and the smoke settles through the scene while you read, write, or sort through a stack of cards. Backflow cones come in many scents, and my backflow cone collection has them. As a gift it suits readers of Lewis Carroll, collectors of Wonderland pieces, and anyone who likes a clock with a story. Between cones it stays on display as a painted sculpture and a working clock.

How to Burn a Backflow Cone in Your White Rabbit Clock Burner

A backflow burner needs a heat-proof surface, still air, and a cone set in its spot before you light it.

  1. Pick a still, heat-proof spot

Place the burner on a ceramic tile or a similar heat-proof surface, because backflow smoke can leave a light residue on whatever it touches. Choose a room with still air, away from fans, vents, open windows, and curtains, since moving air mixes with the smoke and sends it upward again. Keep the burner out of reach of children and pets.

  2. Set the cone and light it

Stand a backflow cone in the burner's cone spot. Hold a flame to the tip until it glows, then blow the flame out. Leave the burner where it is while the smoke builds and cools, because the smoke needs a short time before it begins to sink. Stay with the burner while the cone burns.

  3. Let it cool and wipe it clean

Wait until the cone has burned out and the burner is cool to the touch. Wipe the residue from the sculpture and the surface beneath it with a damp cloth, keeping the cloth away from the clock face.

The Tarot Fellow Standard

I stock this burner for the story it tells. The rabbit and his watch come from the first pages of Carroll’s book, and the clock gives his worry a second dial to read. Backflow smoke adds quiet theater, and the burner needs only a cone and a still room, so it suits anyone trying backflow incense for the first time. The starter cones let you light it the day it arrives. For more pieces to set beside it, my home decor collection carries shelf-ready sculptures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do backflow cones come in different scents?

Yes. Backflow cones are made in scents such as Seven Chakras, Dragon's Blood, Lavender, Lotus, Nag Champa, Palo Santo, Patchouli, Rose, Sandalwood, and White Sage, and one line is described as made with natural herbs, oils, and resins, with ten cones to a box. Choose any scent that suits the room, and look for the word backflow on the box.

How does a backflow incense burner work?

A backflow cone has a hollow channel through its center, and the burner has an opening aligned with that channel. As the cone burns from the top, smoke travels down the channel and loses heat to the cone and to the burner beneath it. Once the smoke is cooler than the room air it is denser than that air, so it sinks, pours over the burner, and pools below. Drafts mix the smoke with warmer air and send it upward again, so a still room gives the best fall.

Can I burn a regular incense cone in a backflow burner?

Backflow burners are made for backflow cones only. A regular cone lacks the hollow channel that carries the smoke downward, so it gives ordinary rising smoke. Look for the word backflow on the cone packaging, and burn the cone on a heat-proof surface, since backflow smoke can leave a light residue on the burner and the surface beneath it.
