St. Joseph Home Seller Kit: A Folk Catholic Tradition for Selling Property
The practice of burying a St. Joseph statue to assist in selling a home is one of the most widely recognized folk Catholic customs in contemporary American and European practice. The tradition draws on the deep Catholic devotion to Joseph as the patron of workers, families, and the domestic sphere. Joseph’s role as the guardian of the Holy Family, the man responsible for finding shelter, safety, and livelihood for those in his care, makes him a natural intercessor for matters of home and property. The burial custom appears to have circulated widely from the mid-20th century onward, though some versions of the story trace it to earlier European Carmelite traditions.
The specific instructions for the burial vary by region and family tradition. Most versions call for burying the statue upside down, near the FOR SALE sign or at the front of the property, with the figure facing the house. The inversion is often explained as a way to get St. Joseph’s attention, or as a gesture that acknowledges the practitioner’s need and humility before the saint. After the property sells, the statue is retrieved from the ground and given a place of honor in the new home as an act of gratitude. This final step is considered important by practitioners who take the tradition seriously.
About This Kit and Who Uses It
This kit includes a 4 3/4-inch resin St. Joseph statue and a prayer card with the traditional home-selling petition. The practice crosses denominational lines and is used by devout Catholics and by non-Catholics alike who find meaning in the ritual structure of intention, action, and gratitude. St. Joseph devotion belongs to a living Catholic tradition, and this kit is a devotional supply, not a substitute for the guidance of your own faith community. Real estate agents across North America are frequently familiar with the custom. I carry this kit because it represents a genuine intersection of folk devotion and practical concern that many customers need, and because finding a good-quality kit at a compact size is worth doing right. How to Use the St. Joseph Home Seller Kit
Three steps for using the St. Joseph home seller kit correctly.
- Read the Prayer Card First
Begin by reading the prayer card included in the kit, which provides the traditional St. Joseph home-selling petition. Familiarize yourself with the prayer before burying the statue, as the intention set during burial matters most.
- Bury St. Joseph Near the Property
Bury the 4 3/4-inch St. Joseph statue upside down near the FOR SALE sign or at the front of the property. Traditional practice calls for burying him facing toward the house, though regional customs vary on exact depth and orientation.
- Retrieve and Honor Him After the Sale
Once the home sells, dig up the statue with care and bring him into the new home. Place St. Joseph in a position of honor, such as a windowsill or small shelf, as a gesture of gratitude for his intercession in the sale.
The Tarot Fellow Standard
I carry this St. Joseph home seller kit because I use it myself (many times!), and it addresses a very specific practical and spiritual need that comes up regularly. The 4 3/4-inch format is well made, comes with instructions, is solid enough to feel substantial in the hand, and is compact enough to bury without effort. This is a kit that does its job.
