Stone of Deep Earth
Shungite is one of the more geologically unusual stones I carry. It’s a carbon-based mineraloid, meaning it sits somewhere between an amorphous carbon and a crystalline structure. Nearly all of it comes from a single source: the Karelian region of northwestern Russia, near Lake Onega. The deposits there are estimated to be around 2 billion years old, which puts their formation well before complex life on this planet. That age alone tends to quiet a room when I mention it.
What makes Shungite scientifically interesting is its fullerene content. Fullerenes are hollow, cage-shaped carbon molecules, specifically C60 and C70 configurations, sometimes called buckyballs. They were first synthesized in a lab in the 1980s and earned a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1996. Shungite is one of the few natural materials known to contain them. You’ll see a lot of claims online about Shungite blocking EMF radiation, and it’s worth being clear: the fullerene content is real and verified. The EMF shielding claim is not scientifically established. I stock this stone for what it actually brings, not for the marketing copy that travels alongside it.
Metaphysically, Shungite is a grounding stone. It’s used in root chakra work, energetic protection, purification, and clearing. The 6-sided pendulum shape is a classic form in dowsing tradition because the flat facets give the bob a stable, balanced swing. If you’re working with chakra scanning, checking energy fields, or asking straightforward yes/no questions, this form is one of the more reliable ones in my collection. How to Use a Shungite Pendulum
Use this three-step method to get a reliable, grounded session from your Shungite pendulum.
- Settle and Ground Before You Begin
Hold the pendulum chain between your thumb and forefinger, letting the Shungite bob hang freely. Sit quietly for a moment, take a breath, and allow the pendulum to settle into stillness before you begin.
- Calibrate Your Yes and No Directions
Establish your yes and no directions first. Ask the pendulum to show you yes, then no, and observe the swing. This calibration step grounds the session and gives you a reliable baseline for all further questions.
- Scan Each Chakra Point in Sequence
Hold the pendulum over each chakra point, starting at the root and moving upward. Note the direction and size of the swing. A tight or still bob may indicate a blocked area worth sitting with in meditation.

I added Shungite to my pendulum lineup because of how consistently the stones hold up on inspection. The black is deep and matte with no filler treatments, and the facets are cleanly cut without the chipped edges you sometimes see in lower-grade lapidary work. I check pendulums before I carry them because a bob that doesn’t hang balanced is useless for dowsing, and this one passes.
One honest note on provenance: if you’re shopping for Shungite anywhere, ask where it’s from. Karelia is not optional, it’s geological. The mineral is essentially defined by that deposit. Shungite from any other claimed origin should be treated as unverified until proven otherwise. The stones I carry can be traced to that source, which is why they’re on my shelves.
