Sunstone: The Oregon Feldspar with Solar Signatures
Sunstone is a variety of feldspar, most commonly oligoclase or labradorite, distinguished by a phenomenon called aventurescence: tiny platelets of hematite or goethite suspended within the stone catch and reflect light, creating a bright golden or copper sparkle that appears to glow from within. Oregon sunstone, mined from the high desert of Lake County, is the state gemstone of Oregon and among the finest sunstone varieties in the world, known for its deep copper schiller and occasional transparent faceting quality. Indian sunstone from Rajasthan tends toward a lighter orange-peach with a softer shimmer.
In crystal practice, sunstone aligns strongly with solar plexus chakra themes: personal power, self-worth, leadership, optimism, and the confidence to act on one’s own authority without seeking approval. It is also worked with for abundance and prosperity, particularly the kind tied to personal initiative and creativity rather than luck alone. Norse mythology associated sunstone with guiding seafarers, and a transparent variety called solarsteinn was used as a navigation tool to locate the sun on overcast days, a use now supported by archaeological finds from Viking-era sites.
The Palm Stone Format: Tactile Meditation Tool
Palm stones are shaped and polished to fit comfortably in the curve of the hand, with a smooth, rounded profile that makes prolonged handling pleasant during seated meditation. Unlike a raw specimen or a point, a palm stone is designed for sustained tactile contact. For sunstone, this format is particularly well-suited to solar plexus work, where placing the warm stone flat against the abdomen during breath work helps practitioners direct focus to that energetic center.
How to Use a Sunstone Palm Stone
Three practical ways to work with a sunstone palm stone in meditation and ritual practice.
- Solar Plexus Chakra Meditation
Lie down and place the sunstone palm stone against your solar plexus, just above the navel. Breathe slowly and visualize the stone’s golden light expanding at that center. This format suits confidence, personal power, and decisive action work.
- Morning Affirmation Anchor
Hold the palm stone in your dominant hand each morning while stating one clear affirmation about your capacity or goals. The tactile warmth becomes associated with that affirmation over time, reinforcing the mental pattern you are building daily.
- Prosperity Altar Placement
Place the sunstone face-up on your abundance altar or in the south sector of a room, which aligns with the fire element in feng shui. Pair it with a yellow candle during prosperity workings that center on self-directed initiative and action.
The Tarot Fellow Standard
I stock sunstone palm stones because sunstone is one of the most underutilized stones in modern crystal practice, consistently overshadowed by citrine and pyrite for prosperity work despite having a richer historical context and a genuine optical phenomenon that distinguishes it from any other feldspar. The palm stone format delivers the best tactile experience for this material. If you want to compare palm stone options across different minerals, browse my worry and palm stones collection. For broader abundance stone options, my abundance crystals section covers multiple formats.

Sunstone is a feldspar with a Mohs hardness of 6-6.5. It is safe to cleanse briefly in running water, sunlight, or smoke. Avoid prolonged soaking. Sunlight cleansing is fitting given the stone’s solar associations and historic navigation use.
No. Natural sunstone varies from pale peach to deep orange-copper depending on iron content and origin. Oregon stones tend toward richer copper and red tones; Indian stones lean peach to gold. Color and sparkle intensity differ between specimens.
