Every tradition has a language for starting over — and plants have always been part of that vocabulary. This subcategory of Herbs By Magical Use collects the new beginnings herbs most associated with fresh starts, rebirth, and fertility: both the physical and the creative, the literal and the metaphorical.
Seeds carry obvious symbolism for beginnings, and many are used in new-start rituals: sunflower seeds for optimism, apple seeds for new growth, mustard seeds for faith in small things. Spearmint and lemon balm bring fresh, new energy. Fennel supports new projects. In traditions rooted in lunar cycle work, these herbs are particularly potent at the New Moon or on the spring equinox — the natural moments of renewed beginning in the year’s wheel.
Use in sachets, bath rituals, candle dressings, or as smoke offerings when beginning a significant new chapter. A thoughtful accompaniment to any ritual marking a transition: a new home, a new relationship, a new career, or simply the conscious decision to begin again.
