Does planting by the moon really work?

It's a long-standing tradition with simple rules. Plant crops that grow above ground, such as lettuce, beans and tomatoes, while the Moon waxes from new to full, and plant root crops such as carrots, beets and onions while it wanes from full to new. University of Illinois Extension notes that few lunar planting traditions have scientific support. Many gardeners still use the Moon calendar as a rhythm for sequencing tasks.

Which Moon sign is best for planting?

In the traditional system the Moon's sign matters as well as its phase. Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are the fruitful water signs, favored for planting, while Leo, Virgo, Sagittarius, Aquarius and Gemini are called barren signs and are kept for weeding. The Moon changes sign every two to three days, and the planner's month-by-month tables show where it sits, so you can find the days that match your crop.

Do the planting tables work in the Southern Hemisphere?

The Moon's phase and sign are the same for everyone on Earth, so the quarter-and-sign guidance holds on any continent. What changes is the growing season. The planner's holidays and monthly essays follow the Northern calendar, so a spring job in March belongs in September south of the equator. Choose your crop's sowing window from local advice, then use the Moon tables to pick among the days inside it.

What is the difference between the Herbal Enchantment Planner and the Witches' Datebook?

Both are 2027 Llewellyn planners with weekly spreads. The Herbal Enchantment Planner opens every month with plant and garden lore and adds Moon-based planting tables. The Witches' Datebook, at 168 pages, carries Jennifer Hewitson's scratchboard illustrations, articles, Full Moon rituals, seasonal recipes and more than 100 magical tips. Choose this one if you grow or cook with herbs, and the Datebook if you want articles and ritual ideas.
