Mastering the Celtic Cross Tarot Spread

The Celtic Cross Tarot Spread is one of the most well-known and widely used spreads in Tarot—but beginners find it difficult, and experienced readers often skip over or misunderstand some of its most insightful placements.

I find it so significant to the Tarot experience, that it’s the only spread I teach in my Tarot 101 classes.

Let’s dive into the Celtic Cross to give you a fresh and practical take, with three of my personal teachings on the most misrepresented, misunderstood, and misread positions in this spread. Understanding the importance of these three placements will make your Celtic Cross readings successful: The Significator, Card 7, and Card 8.

These three placements are often overlooked, yet hold the keys to the spreads most transformative insights.

What Is the Celtic Cross Tarot Spread?

For those new to Tarot or looking to brush up, the Celtic Cross spread is a 10-card layout that explores a central question in rich detail. It is best used if you have a specific, singular question you need to dive into.

It covers the present, challenges, subconscious influences, the past, the near future, the querent’s self-view, environmental factors, hopes and fears, and the potential outcome.

Here is how I learned to draw, place, and read the Celtic Cross. You will notice the order is not how it is now laid out in the little white book, or in most Tarot resources:

Celtic Cross Tarot Spread Diagram - This is how Rick reads the Celtic Cross

CARD ZERO: The Significator

Drawn by the reader before shuffling, this card summarizes the question/theme in the reader’s mind.

CARD ONE: The Card that Covers You

The real question the reading will answer.

CARD TWO: The Card that Crosses

The challenge that must be overcome.

CARD THREE: Problem’s Root

Insight into why the problem exists, the root of the problem.

CARD FOUR: Divine Assistance (The Gift)

Something coming that will help. The Querant doesn’t have to do anything to receive this gift.

CARD FIVE: Recent Past

Hints of lessons already learned that can be of use here. Combine with card three for even greater insight into what led the Querant here.

CARD SIX: Near Future

Usually a timeframe of 2-6 weeks, this card hints at what is coming up. Usually firm and direct.

CARD SEVEN: Querant’s View

How the Querant sees the situation. Check this card with card 8 for hints to whether or not they are in alignment with the universe.

CARD EIGHT: Universal View

How the Universe would prefer the Querant see the issue. This card may also hint toward how others (friends/family) would like to see the reading resolved, but checking this card against card 7 is extremely powerful.

CARD NINE: Hopes and Fears

Gets to the heart of the Querant’s motivations. What do they desire vs what they fear. Hint: Look for duality here in order to see both sides of the mindset.

CARD TEN: Outcome

What the long-term solution, or final outcome, is. Look to this card to tie the reading together. If this card is a Major Arcana card, the path is more fixed than if it’s a Minor Arcana card.

Reimagining the Significator in the Celtic Cross

Traditionally, the Significator (card zero) is a card chosen before shuffling that represents the querent or the focus of the question. But let’s be real—many readers today skip it, either because it feels old-fashioned or unnecessary. I’m here to argue the opposite.

The Significator helps narrow down the subject of a reading. If someone says, “Just tell me what the cards want me to know,” the Celtic Cross might not be the best fit. But if you can identify the topic area—emotions, money, intellect, or ambition—you should choose a Significator that aligns with that.

Pro tip: Have four go-to cards on standby—one for each of these categories. That way, you’re ready for whatever topic lands on your table.

Live example:
If someone asks about a career shift, I might pick the Seven of Pentacles—a card that speaks to reevaluation and investment in long-term goals. Let’s say the first drawn card (Card 1, which covers the Significator) is the Nine of Swords. That immediately tells me the client is wrestling with anxiety and self-doubt. Just with those two cards, we now have a powerful lens for interpreting the rest of the spread.

Rethinking Card 7: Your Alignment with the Situation

Card 7 is often labeled in outdated ways like “the querent’s attitude” or “his position in the matter.” That’s not wrong—it’s just stale.

Let’s modernize it. Think of Card 7 as your current alignment with the situation at hand—Law of Attraction style. It answers the question: How are you energetically lined up with what you’re asking about?

This shift in language makes the card immediately more relatable and actionable for today’s querents. It’s not just your attitude—it’s your energetic posture.

Card 8: The Universe’s Ideal Alignment for You

Now, here’s where it gets juicy. Card 8, traditionally called “his house” or “environment,” is better understood as how the universe would like you to align with your question or desire.

Together, Cards 7 and 8 become a dynamic diagnostic tool.

Ask:
➡️ Are you currently aligned with what the universe wants for you?
➡️ If not, what advice can bridge the gap?

If Card 7 and Card 8 are similar in theme or message, great—you’re on track. But if they’re different? Boom. That’s where your real reading begins. You now have powerful, actionable insight for guiding your querent toward alignment and fulfillment.

Pro Tip: You can use Card 7 and Card 8 for quick, two-card, self-diagnosis readings, which is WAY more powerful than a simple “card of the day” draw.

The Secret Power of These Underrated Cards

So why do many tarot readers overlook these cards?

Because the original guidebooks use confusing, antiquated phrasing that makes them seem vague or irrelevant. But once you reframe them in modern spiritual terms, they become the beating heart of the Celtic Cross. These cards show us where we are and where we’re meant to be.

That’s not just interpretation—that’s transformation.

Try This Simple Update in Your Next Celtic Cross Reading

  1. Pick a Significator based on the question’s domain—emotions, money, intellect, or ambition.
  2. Shuffle and draw Card 1, the card that covers the Significator. This sharpens the focus.
  3. Pay special attention to Cards 7 and 8. Frame Card 7 as the querent’s current alignment, and Card 8 as the universe’s preferred alignment.
  4. Use the contrast (or harmony) between these two cards as your core message or action plan.

Why the Celtic Cross Still Matters Today

In a world full of trendy new tarot spreads, the Celtic Cross still stands strong for one reason: depth. When you approach it with updated language and purpose, it becomes one of the most powerful spiritual tools in your tarot toolkit.

So don’t skip the parts that seem confusing or archaic. Reimagine them. Update the language. Empower the reading.
